The material is from the Duddar mine vicinity, which is Pakistan's largest underground facility for the extraction of Lead and Zinc, located in the mineral-rich Kanraj Tehsil of Lasbela District in southeastern Balochistan. The Duddar mine is known for Blue Smothsonite specimens adding to the confusion in identifying this particular material that has a vibrant colour due to the high level of Zinc present during formation, but it is Aragonite/Calcite.

I secured a large quantity of this very high quality material quite some time ago mostly with intense blue tones but a few nice unusual green pieces. There are also two distinct formation styles which unfortunately leads to visual confusion and with intentional or unintentional mislabeling of this material as Smithsonite or Hemimorphite. hemimorphite being is a Zinc Silicate, Smithsonite is a Zinc Carbonate and Blue Aragonite/Calcite are both Calcium Carbonates.

Calcium carbonate forms as both Aragonite and Calcite, and these two minerals only differ in their crystallisation. Calcite is the stable form, whereas aragonite is metastable: Over time, or when heated, it can ultimately transform into calcite. Aragonite was named by Abrahan Gottlieb Werner after Molina de Aragón, Spain, the locality where this mineral was first described.

Calcite the more common mineral, forms in trigonal crystals, whereas Aragonite forms orthorhombic crystals. Calcium carbonate usually crystallizes as calcite, but surprisingly, it forms aragonite in seawater. While scientists have known that different concentrations of magnesium in the surrounding water affect the fate of calcium carbonate, they have had no explanation for this. The true identity of microcrystalline forms of Aragonite or Calcite may also not be known without complex testing, and this can also cause a confusion between these species.

Aragonite is the main component of many organic substances, such as pearl and coral. The iridescent surface of pearl and mother of pearl is actually a layer of Aragonite secreted by molluscs and related invertebrates.

Green Aragonite is a revitalizing stone that enhances one’s connection to nature and the Earth’s nurturing energies. This mineral is particularly beneficial for grounding and stabilising, helping to restore balance to the emotional body and soothe stress and tension. It activates the heart chakra, promoting compassion and empathy towards oneself and others, and encourages environmental consciousness. Green Aragonite also aids in personal transformation by fostering patience and acceptance, making it an excellent support for those navigating change and seeking to align more closely with their true self and natural rhythms.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0870/2453/3781/files/5885dcd4-il_fullxfull.7196619506_hz7s.jpg?v=1765592663
