Many consider this location to have produced some of the finest specimens of this rare species.

Reaphook Hill is located on Martin’s Well Station, adjacent to a zinc and phosphorus rich deposit hosted in diapiric breccias in late Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. It was mined for a few years in the 1970’s by Chris Johnson, a mineral dealer, for mineral specimens (mostly Scholzite) and has been closed to collectors ever since.

Scholzite:-

Named to honor Dr. Adolph Scholz, a German chemist and mineral collector. Cryptomelane is one of the manganiferous products designated under the generic name Psilomelane. This is “Psilomelane potassium”, potassium can be very partially replaced by other elements, notably Thallium. It is found in the superficial parts of rocks and manganiferous deposits. Its name is derived from the Greek kruptos (hidden) and melanos(black) because this mineral was difficult to identify among the other Manganese oxides, also black. Cryptomelane usually occurs in earthy or compact masses, steel gray blue to black, staining the fingers. Like most Cryptocrystalline Manganese minerals, it tends to evolve into well-crystallized species (Pyrolusite and Magnetite).

Combination:-

The Cryptomelane typically forms a stark contrast against the Scholzite, appearing as dark grey-to-black botryoidal (grape-like) micro-spheres or coatings. Cryptomelane commonly manifests as a second-generation mineral coating over the pre-existing Scholzite crystals with rounded Cryptomelane spheres scattered directly across or perched on top of the elongated, sword-like Scholzite needles.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0870/2453/3781/files/IMG_6321_4924ef7b-7c04-4c40-a481-6097425a863d.jpg?v=1792649397
https://naturesgiftsbychris.com/products/46g-scholzite-with-cryptomelane-specimen-a-from-south-australia
