But the difference in the fibre optic properties is the easiest test. If you place Ulexite on newsprint, you can still read the letters underneath even up to 30 degree angles. That's not the case with Satin Spar Gypsum, the image becomes blurred at angles as small as 10 degrees and is completely unreadable at 20 degrees.

Gypsum has several variety names that are widely used.

Selenite is the colourless and transparent variety that shows a pearl like lustre and has been described as having a moon like glow. The word selenite comes from the greek for Moon and means moon rock.
Another variety is a compact fibrous aggregate called Satin Spar. This variety has a very satin like look that gives a play of light up and down the fibrous crystals.

Ulexite often tends to have white and black inclusions that make it not totally transparent, while satin spar gypsum is often nearly crystal clear. By holding the specimens up to a light, you can easily see the difference. Also, satin spar gypsum is more prone to internal cracks.

Though sometimes grouped together as "selenite", the four crystalline varieties of gypsum have differences. General identifying descriptions of the related crystalline varieties are:

Selenite - most often transparent and colorless: it is named after Greek σεληνη "the moon".
if selenite crystals show translucency, opacity, and/or colour, it is caused by the presence of other minerals, sometimes in druse, (druse is the crust of tiny, minute, or micro crystals that form or fuse either within or upon the surface of a rock vug, geode, or another crystal).

Satin Spar - most often silky, fibrous, and translucent (pearly, milky); can exhibit some coloration.
the satin spar name can also be applied to fibrous calcite (a related calcium mineral) – calcite is a harder mineral – and feels greasier, waxier, or oilier to the touch.

Desert Rose - rosette shaped gypsum with outer druse of sand or with sand throughout – most often sand coloured (in all the colours that sand can exhibit)
the desert rose name can also be applied to barite desert roses (another related sulphate mineral) – barite is a harder mineral with higher density.

Gypsum Flower - rosette shaped gypsum with spreading fibres – can include outer druse. The difference between desert roses and gypsum flowers is that desert roses look like roses, whereas gypsum flowers form a myriad of shapes.

Gypsum has natural thermal insulating properties, all varieties feel warm to the touch.

Now that the technical geological side is out of the way let’s talk about these pieces - Satin Spar.

Satin Spar Selenite helps you to connect to both past and future lives. Your future lives are not yet written in stone, so to speak, so these would not be absolutes, dependant on how this life goes.

This crystal brings you good judgment and can help you see that justice is properly done during conflicts. It can help you find the strength to make good decisions. It helps you to see that it is better to be a tree that moves in the wind rather than stands firm against the wind. Selenite helps you see if anything is wrong with your physical body and to receive messages to show you how to fix it. This crystal keeps the spine free of energy blockages and keep the muscles more flexible.

Selenite has a high vibration, and its primary gifts are cleansing, clearing, and the release of stagnation. It is one of the few crystals that is genuinely self-cleansing, and it is frequently used to cleanse and charge other crystals, as well as areas. In the right situation it can help to restore equilibrium, so although it may be quite ungrounding and over-stimulating for some, many find it calms and soothes to such an extent that it is sometimes even used as an aid for sleep.

Known to activate the crown chakra, which is directly linked to the spirit, Selenite allows you to form and understand a deeper connection to the earth. This is the ultimate crystal for clearing and cleansing energies and auras. Selenite provides access to an experience of a ‘higher self’ which stems from the crown chakra. When this chakra is activated, it may allow you to experience a blissful state of infinite knowledge called ‘satchidananda’.

Selenite, especially satin spar, is soft and should be handled gently and not carried in a pouch with other crystals, to avoid damage. Also avoid getting it wet. It is a hydrous mineral, meaning that not only does it contain water, but it readily absorbs water if placed in it. If this happens, it will become dull and may even fall apart. On occasion your crystal may need cleaning (as in getting the dust off), in which case, either vacuum it with care, or use a slightly dampened sponge or cloth that has been thoroughly rung out first, to wipe over it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0870/2453/3781/files/d9504ba7-il_fullxfull.4878682536_kr8m.jpg?v=1765592764
